Carl Saunder, General Manager – State League, today announced the 2016 Southern Cross State League Team of the Year.

The team is dominated by Glenorchy and North Launceston with 6 players each. Burnie Dockers is well represented with 4 players including 3 players in the ruck/midfield combination.

The clubs that finished in the final five after the home and away season have vindicated their position on the ladder by having a combined number of 20 of the 22 man squad.

Glenorchy Football Club’s outstanding home and away season where they won the minor premiership has seen Head Coach Aaron Cornelius selected as the Coach of the Year; Burnie’s Clinton Proctor and North Launceston’s Zane Littlejohn have been named as assistant coaches.

In naming the 22 players and coaching staff to receive Team of the Year status, State League General Manager, Carl Saunder said, “It was no surprise the competition’s top 3 teams in the home and away season of 2016 have filled the majority of spots in the line-up”.

Now in it’s seventh year the Team of the Year is based on selecting the best players for each position, as opposed to selecting the best 22 players in the league.

Glenorchy’s Ben Reynolds has been named captain after another stellar season at Centre Half Back for the Magpies.

Umpires also received recognition with Nic Saltmarsh named as the Umpire of the Year.

Saunder said, “It’s a huge honour for each of the 22 players, coaching staff and umpire to be named in the team of the year.  The selection panel considered the quality of the players available extremely strong, and is a testament to the number of high quality players competing in the TSL”.
